How to Choose Artificial Hanging Plants That Look Full

The listing photo showed a lush cascade of ivy spilling over a basket. What arrived was a dozen thin plastic strands that hang straight down like wet string. Artificial hanging plants are among the easiest faux plants to get wrong online, because the photo is taken from the one angle that flatters them, and you will see yours from below, from the side and in daylight.

I buy trailing faux plants for homes and small shops every month. Here is how I judge them before paying, and what the price difference between a 20 dollar and a 70 dollar hanging plant actually buys.

Why artificial hanging plants fail more often than potted ones

A potted faux fiddle leaf sits at eye level and gets judged from one side. A hanging plant is seen from underneath, which is the worst view for most cheap stems. From below you see glued joints, the bare center where strands meet, and the shiny underside of every leaf.

Hanging plants also depend on volume. A real pothos grows in layers over months, so leaves overlap at different depths. Most budget faux versions are a single bundle of identical strands cut to the same length. That is what makes them look like a wig rather than a plant.

Count the stems, not the length

Listings love to advertise length: 36 inches, 47 inches, "extra long trailing vines." Length is cheap to make. Fullness is what costs money, and the number that predicts it is stem count.

Stem countHow it looks hungTypical price
6 to 8 strandsSparse, gaps visible from across the room12 to 25 dollars
12 to 18 strandsReasonably full at the top, thin at the tips25 to 50 dollars
20 or more, mixed lengthsLayered, natural taper, full from below50 to 110 dollars

Mixed lengths matter as much as the count. Look for a listing that mentions strands in two or three lengths, such as 18, 26 and 34 inches. That stagger creates the tapered shape real trailing plants have. If the seller will not state stem count, ask. A seller who does not know is usually selling the sparse version.

Also be wary of listed length when the plant is sold coiled. As our piece on how listed height misleads online explains, measurements are often taken from the tip of the longest strand to the base of the pot, not the visible drop.

Leaf material and the underside test

Because you look up at hanging plants, the back of each leaf matters. Three things to check in photos or in person:

  • Leaf backs. Real ivy and pothos leaves are paler and matte underneath. Cheap faux leaves are the same glossy green on both sides, which reads as plastic instantly.
  • Veining. Printed veins look flat. Molded veins catch light and cast tiny shadows. Ask for a close photo of a single leaf if the listing has none.
  • Stem wire. Each strand should have a bendable wire inside so you can shape the drape. Without it, every strand hangs perfectly straight.

Material affects longevity too. PE leaves feel softer and more natural, while PVC holds rigid detail and costs less. PE generally keeps its color and flexibility better near a sunny window, which matters a lot for hanging plants that often sit high near glass.

The counter-take on UV protection for hanging plants

The standard advice is that every faux plant needs UV resistant coating. For floor plants on the far side of a room, I often think that is an upsell you do not need.

Hanging plants are different. They are usually placed in the brightest spots: in front of windows, on porches and in conservatories, where there is often no shade at all. A non UV treated plant in direct sun can fade from deep green to a dusty blue grey in six to twelve months. For a hanging plant within two meters of a window, paying an extra 10 to 20 dollars for stated UV resistance is one of the few upgrades I always recommend. For a hallway or bathroom with no direct light, skip it.

Hanging hardware and weight

A faux plant weighs very little, which creates its own problem. A light plastic pot swings in every draft and tilts when strands hang unevenly. Some practical points:

  1. Check what the pot is. A thin plastic grower pot with a rope hanger looks cheap from below. Ceramic or fiber stone pots hang straighter and look more convincing.
  2. Add weight if needed. A handful of decorative gravel or a small sealed bag of sand in the base stops swinging. See our comparison of artificial plant pot fillers for options that also hide the foam base.
  3. Measure chain or rope length. Most included hangers are 60 to 90 centimeters. If your ceiling is 2.7 meters high, the plant may hang above eye level and lose its effect.
  4. Use the right ceiling fixing. Even light plants need a proper hook in a joist or a suitable anchor. Plasterboard alone can pull loose over time.

Styling choices that make cheaper plants look better

If budget is tight, a few tricks help a mid range plant pass as a premium one:

  • Combine two plants in one pot. Two 15 strand bundles in a slightly wider pot often look fuller than one expensive 25 strand plant, for less money.
  • Mix species. Pairing a trailing pothos with a smaller string of pearls breaks up the uniform look.
  • Fluff and bend every strand. Spend ten minutes shaping each strand into gentle curves. Straight strands are the number one giveaway.
  • Trim a few tips shorter. Cutting three or four strands by 5 to 10 centimeters with wire cutters gives an irregular, grown look.

Finally, dust. Hanging plants sit close to the ceiling where warm air carries dust upward, so they get grimy faster than floor plants. Take them down every two to three months, shake them outdoors and rinse PE leaves briefly in lukewarm water. A plant you cannot easily unhook will look tired within a year, so factor access into where you hang it.

For a broader set of warning signs, our guide on how to spot a cheap faux plant applies to every type, including hanging ones.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make artificial hanging plants look fuller?

Bend each strand individually so they curve and overlap instead of hanging straight. You can also combine two plants in one pot or add a few extra trailing stems bought separately. Staggering strand lengths by trimming some shorter makes the plant look naturally grown.

Do artificial hanging plants fade in sunlight?

Yes, plants without UV protection can fade noticeably within six to twelve months of direct sun. Hanging plants are especially exposed because they often hang near windows or outdoors. Choose a plant with stated UV resistance for any bright spot.

What is the most realistic artificial hanging plant?

Pothos, ivy and string of pearls tend to look the most convincing because their real versions have simple, repeating leaves that molding reproduces well. Realism depends more on stem count, mixed strand lengths and matte leaf backs than on the species itself.
