How to Choose an Artificial Fiddle Leaf Fig That Looks Real

The real fiddle leaf fig is famous for dropping leaves the week after you bring it home, which is exactly why so many people look for a faux version instead.

The real fiddle leaf fig is famous for dropping leaves the week after you bring it home, which is exactly why so many people look for a faux version instead. The trouble is that a bad artificial fiddle leaf fig looks worse than a dying real one: flat plastic leaves, a straight dowel trunk and a pot that gives the game away from across the room.

As a buyer, I have handled well over 60 versions of this plant from different factories. This guide covers how to choose an artificial fiddle leaf fig that looks real, what a fair price is at each height, and the details that separate a convincing tree from an expensive prop.

What a real fiddle leaf fig looks like up close

You cannot judge a copy without knowing the original. A healthy Ficus lyrata has large, violin shaped leaves 25 to 45 centimeters long, thick and slightly leathery, with a glossy top and a matte underside. The veins are pale green and clearly raised. Leaves are not all the same size or angle. New growth near the top is smaller and lighter green.

The trunk is woody, grey brown and often slightly crooked. Indoor trees tend to have leaves bunched toward the top third, with bare trunk below. A faux tree with perfectly even leaves from soil to crown is the first giveaway.

How to judge an artificial fiddle leaf fig before you buy

When shopping online, zoom in on every product photo and check these five points. If the listing does not show them clearly, ask the seller or move on.

Leaf material and finish

The better trees use real touch polyurethane or a coated fabric that has slight give when pressed. Cheap ones use hard injection molded plastic with a uniform shine. Look for a two tone finish: glossier on top, duller underneath. Single finish leaves read as fake even in good light.

Vein detail

Veins should be molded into the leaf with visible depth, ideally in a lighter color. Printed veins on a flat surface look fine in a thumbnail and poor in your living room.

Leaf count and size variation

For a 150 centimeter tree, a convincing count is roughly 35 to 60 leaves in at least three sizes. Fewer than 25 looks sparse. More than 80 on that height often looks like a shrub rather than a fig.

Trunk

Natural wood trunks with faux leaves wired on are the most realistic. Plastic trunks wrapped in printed bark can pass at a distance but look glossy under a ceiling light. Check whether the trunk has a slight bend.

Pot and topper

Most trees ship in a black plastic nursery pot filled with cement or foam, topped with fake moss. You will want to place it inside a nicer planter and cover the base with real bark or dried moss. Budget for that in advance.

Our broader guide on how to spot a cheap faux plant before you buy it covers the same checks for other species.

What you should expect to pay

HeightBudget rangeGood quality rangeWhat the extra money buys
90 to 120 cm40 to 70 dollars90 to 160 dollarsReal touch leaves, natural trunk
150 to 165 cm70 to 120 dollars160 to 280 dollarsHigher leaf count, varied sizes
180 to 210 cm110 to 180 dollars280 to 450 dollarsThicker trunk, branching, weighted pot

The jump in quality between budget and mid range is large. The jump between mid range and premium is smaller and often comes down to trunk realism. For a fuller breakdown, see what a good artificial plant should cost.

Height on the listing versus height in your room

Listings usually measure from the bottom of the pot to the top leaf. Some measure from the soil line, which makes a tree look 15 to 20 centimeters taller than it will stand. Once you place it in a decorative planter, it rises again by the planter's base height.

Measure your space from floor to ceiling and aim for the top leaf to sit at least 30 centimeters below the ceiling. A tree that almost touches the ceiling looks staged. We explain the common tricks in how listed height misleads when you buy faux plants online.

Why "fuller is better" is the wrong rule for this plant

Most buying guides tell you to choose the fullest, densest faux plant you can find, because sparse fakes look cheap. That is good advice for ferns, ivy and hanging plants. For a fiddle leaf fig, it is usually wrong.

Real indoor fiddle leaf figs are rarely dense. They grow toward light, drop lower leaves, and end up with an open, slightly irregular crown and a visible trunk. A faux tree stuffed with leaves from top to bottom reads as artificial within seconds because nobody has seen a real one like that in a home. The most convincing trees I sell have clear gaps, a bare lower trunk of 40 to 60 centimeters and a crown that leans a little to one side.

So when you compare listings, look for shape and variation before leaf count. If two trees are the same price, choose the one with the more natural silhouette even if it has fewer leaves.

Setting it up so it looks right

  1. Bend the leaves. Each leaf has a wire stem. Angle the upper leaves upward and outward and let the lower ones droop slightly, as a real plant does.
  2. Turn some leaves to face the window. Real plants track the light. Faux ones placed facing the room look posed.
  3. Use a real planter. A matte ceramic or woven basket about 5 centimeters wider than the nursery pot works well.
  4. Cover the base with natural material. Real bark chips or preserved moss hide the foam and add texture.
  5. Dust monthly. Dust on large flat leaves is very visible. A soft dry cloth or a cool hairdryer setting keeps them clean.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should an artificial fiddle leaf fig be?

For most living rooms with ceilings around 240 to 270 centimeters, a tree of 150 to 180 centimeters including the pot looks natural. Leave at least 30 centimeters between the top leaf and the ceiling, and remember that a decorative planter adds height.

Do artificial fiddle leaf figs fade in sunlight?

Most indoor faux trees will fade over one to two years in strong direct sun, especially near south facing windows. If the spot gets several hours of direct light, choose a UV treated tree or place it a little back from the glass.

How can you make a fake fiddle leaf fig look real?

Shape the leaves so they face the light, keep the lower trunk partly bare, put the nursery pot inside a real planter and cover the base with bark or moss. Choosing a tree with a natural wood trunk and varied leaf sizes makes the biggest difference.
