Silk, Polyester or Latex: What Fades First

Material names on artificial plant listings are close to meaningless. Silk almost never means silk. Real touch is not a material at all.

Material names on artificial plant listings are close to meaningless. Silk almost never means silk. Real touch is not a material at all. What matters is what the leaf is actually made of and whether anything was done to protect the colour, and those two facts are rarely on the label.

I have been running fade tests on a south facing sill for four years. Here is what the materials actually do.

None of that tells you about fade resistance, because fade resistance comes from pigment choice and from whether a UV stabiliser was mixed into the material. A well pigmented polyester will outlast a badly pigmented polyurethane by years.

The order things faded on my sill

Four years, one south facing window, no curtain. I photographed each piece against the same grey card every three months.

Polyester fabric leaves went first, and the way they went is worth describing. They did not fade evenly. The green washed out towards a grey blue while the printed veins stayed dark, so the leaf ended up looking like a photocopy of itself. That started to be visible at around fourteen months.

Polyurethane coated leaves held colour much longer, closer to three years before I could see it against the card, but they failed differently. The coating went chalky and slightly sticky, and dust began to bond to it rather than sitting on top. Once that happens the piece cannot be cleaned properly again, which we get into in dusting without wrecking the finish.

Moulded plastic was the most stable of the three in colour and the worst in every other way. Two of the four cheap plastic pieces went brittle at the leaf edges by the third summer, and one shed a leaf when I picked it up.

Why UV rated is close to a meaningless claim

There is no consumer standard behind the phrase. A manufacturer can add a token quantity of stabiliser, or nothing at all, and still print it on the box. I have tested pieces sold as UV rated that faded faster than unlabelled stock from the same shop.

Two things do correlate with real protection. The first is a price gap, because stabiliser is a genuine cost and nobody absorbs it silently. The second is a stated warranty in years for outdoor use, because that is a claim a company can be held to in a way that a printed phrase is not.

If a seller cannot tell you how many years the outdoor warranty runs, treat the plant as an indoor plant that happens to be sold outdoors.

How this changes what I buy

For anything within a metre of a bright window, I buy polyurethane and accept the chalking, because a slightly tacky leaf at year three still looks green and a washed out polyester leaf does not.

For a dim corner, and most of a home is a dim corner, polyester is the better buy. It takes printed detail far better than moulded material, it is lighter, and the fade mechanism that ruins it needs light it will never get. Some of the best looking plants I own are cheap fabric pieces that have sat in a room with no window for six years without changing at all.

For genuine outdoor use I now buy very little, and only with a written warranty. A balcony in summer is a harsher environment than most people expect, and the pieces that survive it are dull, thick and expensive.

Colour is only one of the three ways they die

Fade gets discussed because it is easy to photograph. In my records it is not actually the most common reason a plant leaves the flat.

The first is shedding. The wrap holding leaf to stem dries out, usually at around year four on cheaper stock, and the plant begins losing leaves whenever it is moved. That is unfixable, and it happens indoors, out of the light, where fade would never have touched it.

The second is deformation. Wire inside a stem takes a set. A plant pushed against a wall for two years holds that flattened shape even after you move it, and it becomes obvious the moment it stands somewhere open.

The third is the one people notice last, which is dust bonding into a coating that has begun to break down. The plant is the right colour and still looks grey, and washing it makes it worse.

If you have a fixed budget, spend it here

Given a set amount of money, I would put it into stem construction rather than leaf material every time. A wired stem with a well glued wrap in a mediocre polyester will still be usable in eight years. An unwired stem in the finest polyurethane will be a bent object in three.

How you tell in a shop is in the buying checklist, and it is the bend test. Materials decide how the plant looks on day one. Construction decides whether you still own it in a decade.

A test you can run at home

Buy two of a stem you like. Put one in the window and one in a drawer. Photograph both together against a sheet of white paper every three months, in the same light, at the same time of day.

You will know inside a year whether that supplier is worth returning to, and you will have a record rather than an impression. Almost nobody does this, which is why so much repeat buying is guesswork. It is also how the numbers on this page were produced, and if you disagree with them, this is how to prove me wrong.
